You Might Have These Plan Benefits — And Not Even Know It

Your health plan does much more than pay claims. Don't miss out on all the other benefits that may come with your plan – from discounts on health-related products and services, to better information about quality and costs, to help managing a chronic condition or recovering from surgery.

Grab those savings.

Many health plans offer you discounts on everything from contact lenses, acupuncture and dental care to gym memberships or yoga classes. Be sure to check your plan's materials to see where you might be able to save, or call and ask your carrier what's available to you.

Take help when offered.

Want to lose weight or get your blood pressure down? Did you just get a diagnosis of heart disease or diabetes – or have you been living with a chronic condition and don't feel like it's under control? Are you expecting surgery and dread the transition to home and the recovery period? Depending on your individual needs, your health plan might offer an online program, one-on-one counseling from a nurse or something in between to help you get and stay healthy.

Check out your doctors and hospitals.

Your health plan may offer you a way to learn more about the quality of care you can expect at your local hospitals, or how much the same service would cost from different doctors. Check out the tools available to you.

Manage your money.

If you have a high-deductible health plan, you may also have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). Or, your employer may offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). These funds let you use pre-tax dollars to pay out-of-pocket health care costs that aren't paid by your health plan. You may use the funds to pay your medical co-insurance or co-pay, cover the cost of braces for your kids, pay for glasses or contacts, and more. An FSA may even pay for over-the-counter medicines if they're prescribed by your doctor and filled at a pharmacy. If you have one of these funds, be sure to use it!
