TIP OF THE MONTH: 3 Strategies for Improving Ergonomics

Automatic Data Processing Insurance Agency, Inc. (ADPIA) supports our clients by providing best practices that help enhance productivity, save money and can help reduce employee injuries. Consider these 3 strategies for managing risk through improved office ergonomics.

Strategy One: Alleviate Common Cause of Eye Strain
Eye strain in the workplace can be caused by several factors, including improper lighting levels.

  • Matching office lighting to job functions
  • Using matte finishes on walls, floors and furniture
  • Installing filters to diffuse overhead lighting

Strategy Two: Assess Technology Usage
From improper monitor height to prolonged intense computer work, technology can be a major contributor to poor ergonomics. Improve the situation with these steps:

  • Positioning monitors so eye level is at the top of the screen
  • Adjusting brightness and contrast
  • Angling monitors away from light sources

Strategy Three: Encourage Proper Lifting Techniques
Lifting supplies or equipment can take its toll on the back of even the fittest employee. Remind everyone of these best practices:

  • Consider the weight of the object before lifting
  • Bend at the knees and lift with the legs
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help

Common sense and simple adjustments can go a surprisingly long way in protecting your staff from needless injury.
